The Vibe

Welcome to Pure Grappling

Training out of Penzance and Helston in West Cornwall, you’ll find some of the nicest (and possibly strangest) bunch of people you could ever meet; all waiting to take you down, sweep, choke and arm bar you.

Our proven coaching methods yield fast gains in performance, improved fitness, increased problem solving abilities and all round strength whilst encouraging a healthy playful frame of mind that ensures that you’ll have fun and enjoy the training.

– We are a small but growing group of friends and team mates who gather each week to unlock more of our potential, learn about ourselves and our capabilities.

– We are a group that train without politics and titles and welcome others to do the same.

– We have cast aside the tradition that you will find in most martial arts clubs and train for fitness and fun.

– We have replaced bowing and grunting with handshakes and smiles.

– We are willing to promote anyone who deserves it—members or not.

– We are committed to making our training space an area that encourages growth, allows us to play, and does not restrict us the boundaries of ‘style’ or ‘tradition’.

– We believe that students the come to train with us are treated as individuals and that everybody should be welcomed.

Code of Conduct

Pure Grappling is committed to providing a safe, welcoming and respectful training environment for everyone. All members, coaches and visitors are expected to follow this code of conduct at all times.

Respect & Inclusion

We operate a zero tolerance policy for bullying, harassment, hazing or sexualised conduct. Discrimination based on any protected characteristic will not be tolerated. Everyone is welcome here, and everyone deserves to feel safe.

Safety Priorities

When training, your priorities should always be in this order:

  1. Your own safety
  2. Your training partner's safety
  3. The safety of those around you
  4. Technical progress
  5. Winning or losing rounds

Training Conduct

  • Adjust your intensity according to your partner's size, experience level and how hard they want to go.
  • Exercise care when applying your bodyweight, especially with lighter partners.
  • Be aware of the space around you to avoid collisions with other pairs.
  • Take extra care during standing positions due to the increased space needed.
  • Every member has the unconditional right to refuse to train with anyone, without needing to give a reason. Do not pressure others to participate.
  • Always respect the tap. When your training partner taps, stop immediately and check on them, even if you don't think you have a submission on. Make sure they are alright before continuing.
  • If you have an injury, health issue or disability that may affect your ability to spar or practise certain techniques, please tell the instructor.

Banned Techniques

  • Jumping techniques (including jumping closed guard)
  • Scissor takedowns
  • Slams of any kind
  • Any action prohibited by the IBJJF rulebook (biting, striking, etc.)

Hygiene

  • Ensure you and your training gear are clean before starting class. Wash your clothing between every session.
  • Keep your feet clean and wear shoes or flip-flops off the mat.
  • Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed short.
  • Remove all jewellery or cover it with athletic tape.
  • Wear clothing without pockets or zips.
  • Stay home if you are feeling unwell or suspect a skin infection.

Boundaries & Power Dynamics

Coaches and senior members should be aware of the position of authority they hold. All interactions should remain transparent and appropriate. Private one-to-one messaging with under-18s is not permitted unless a parent or guardian can see it. Use official club channels wherever possible.

Online Conduct

The same standards of respect and behaviour that apply on the mat also apply online. Bullying, harassment or inappropriate conduct via social media or messaging is treated the same as in-person behaviour.

Reporting a Concern

If something happens that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, please speak up. You can report a concern through any of the options listed on our Safeguarding page. Retaliation against anyone who raises a concern will not be tolerated and may result in suspension or expulsion.
